Denture Care and Tips

November 4, 2015

If you are one who fills their mouth with the strong, successful, and reliable appliance called a denture, you must know that cleaning your appliance is very important. If you don’t know that, now you do! It is very important that you clean your dentures each day, and you can do so by doing the following:

Brush your appliance daily
Just like brushing your teeth, it is extremely important to brush your dentures each day. However, you do not need to brush with toothpaste. There are many types of toothpastes that can harm the dentures, so it is best to keep from using them. Simply brush your appliance with a soft-bristled toothbrush (one that is designed to clean dentures) and water. It is also recommended that you rinse the appliance after each meal.

Use the proper denture cleaner
Whatever you do, do not use toothpaste, bleach, or household cleaners to clean your dentures. It is best to use denture cleaner, hand soap, or mild dishwashing liquid. If you choose to use denture cleaner, make sure you pick a product that has been approved by the American Dental Association. This seal of acceptance will ensure that the cleaner has been tested for safety and effectiveness.

Take care of the dentures
When you take the appliance out of your mouth, make sure you keep it moist so it does not dry or lose its shape. You can place the dentures in denture cleaner or in water. However, if your denture has metal attachments, it’s best to place the appliance in water rather than cleaning solution.

Handle the appliance carefully
Do your best not to drop the dentures. Dropping it can damage the appliance. So, when you take it out of your mouth and put it back in, stand over a folded towel or lean over a sink full of water.

Call our office today if you have any questions. We are here to help you in any way we can, and we are happy to help you properly take care of your dentures as much as possible! We look forward to talking with you.
