Tooth Extraction Secrets for a Healthy Smile

By Island Dental

As with most cases in life, accidents do arise. Through no fault of your own, you may face a time when a tooth needs to be extracted. Even though tooth extractions can be a difficult time, with the proper care, you can recover quickly and take steps required to replace the tooth. The first thing you should do when you realize you are going to need a tooth extraction is to schedule a firm game plan in advance:

Organize a game plan to be able to effectively and safely care for your mouth during recovery time, which includes planning ahead. If you are a smoker, either give up the habit or stop smoking at least 48 hours before the procedure. If any problems or issues arise, contact your dentist when possible.

Once the surgery has been accomplished, allow your body time to rest. Be sure to adhere to your dentist’s instructions and take any medications accordingly that have been given to help you cope with pain or inflammation. In addition, ice packs can be used to decrease facial swelling. If you are still under the effects of anesthesia, do not eat before it wears off as it poses a severe choking risk.
